About the work

To write my first Flute Concerto, I broadly imagined a tale set in the time and place of the chimú civilization - a civilization that flourished in the northern Peruvian coast around the XII. century. The Concerto is a narration of this imagined story.

What is the tale about? Of course, the music allows for different interpretations, and it’s quite possible that different listeners will imagine different stories. In my mind, the work tells the tale of a military confrontation; during the first five minutes, we hear a mighty and grandiose chimú army slowly approaching from a distance, regrouping at a designated meeting point, and engaging in mystical preparation before the battle. The outcome of this battle can also be interpreted in different ways from the music. The flute, as the soloist, serves as the principal narrator of the story.
